Audience

1) Why is audience important?
The audience is important as it allows for media products to gain money. This can be an example for movies as they use money to make the movie and promote to the audience so they can buy tickets to watch it. The movies then hope that enough people in the public watch it so they can gain a profit. This is why they spend so much money to promote a product. This can also be used for music videos as a video that is released needs views from their target audience and also needs people to buy their records for them to gain money.

2) Explain the term mass audience?
A mass audience is a large audience that is targeted by the makers of a media product. This is usually done to gain more money and views An example of this is could be a television programme such as a soap opera. This is because they are targeted to most people as they try to have material on their shows which can satisfy different kinds of audiences such as teenagers, families and adult. This is done by a lot of companies as they are then able to gain more money from this kind of audience.

3) Explain the term niche audience?
A niche audience is the opposite to a mass audience. This means that the makers of the product try to target it to a small audience. This can be done to cater peoples specifc likes in a show. An example of a programme could be custom my ride or pimp my ride for car lovers. This only really interests them as they like those kinds of programmes. This type of audience could also be targeted when doing local news shows as they can show main news stories from the area which a person is in. An example of this could be midlands today.

4) How does the media shape the perception of the world?
The media can influence the world in many different ways. This can inlude the use of newspapers, movies and video games. Newspapers have the oppertunity to tell stories which may or may not be true, to the public and they can make them believe it. They can be biased in newspapers and can tell lies which are harmful to the people invloved. An example of this is when the sun printed out a story which made false claims about the liverpool fans in the hillborough disaster and for many years the liverpool fans were criticsesd until recently when the allegations were proven wrong. Video games can promote voilence with some of the fighting games that are played. This means that little kids will try to imitate them and may get hurt. This can also happen with movies.

5) How powerful are the media in influencing the ideas and behaviours of the audience?
The media can can influence the behaviour of the public as they can show stuff on television or print stuff on newspapers that affect the publics way of life such as what they eat or how they sleep. This has been done when there is an outbreak of a disease which is then shown on a media product as is made to look worse than it actually is. An example of this could be the swine flu out break which lead the media to create a craze for the public on what is acceptable to eat and what is not. This shows how the media is able to create unrest in the mind of the public and cause them to alter their behaviour in some way.

6) Explain the blulmer and katz theory (the four areas)?
The uses and gratification theory from bulmer and katz is a popular way to understand mass communication. This theory does not focus on the message but more on the audience by asking what people do with media? The theory assumes that the audience have an active role in using media and also holds the audience responsible for choosing media to meet their needs.

Task 2

Animation-Daft punk 'One more time'

The music video by Daft Punk called 'one more time' is an animated music video. This includes the band singing their song in a concert to an audience. Since the video is animated all the people in the world are blue. The audience members includes people of all ages. The video also includes people from all over the world listening to the song and dancing with it. These include families inside their own homes and people at their work stations including workers inside a space station. These people are too busy dancing to see a spacecraft approaching the earth which ends up containing aliens who harm their world. The song is of a techno genre and is not really targeted towards kids. There are different camera shots used. One of these include the camera moving from the bottom of the performers to the top of them. The camera also pans from one side of the concert to the other to see the audience dancing to the music. There are many different effects used for the lighting of the video. This makes the video very colourful and interesting to watch.

Live-Linkin park 'numb/encore'

Alive music video is a music video that shows the singers singing the song liive in front of an audience.
This is a music video made by the singer Jay Z and the band Linkin park. The music video was directed by Kimo Proudfoot and featured a mix of thier performance of the sng in concert in the roxy and also it shows some behind the scene footage of the singers which is in black and white. The video starts of with the singers in front of a live audience singing their song. The video the changes to clips of the singers behind the scene, while recording the song and also clips of them in different places. This is an example of a music video that was recorded in front of a live audience. The songs genre is hip hop, rap and rock. There are camera shots that show the singers close up and also show the singers from far. They also show the audience singing and dancing along with the song. There are different types of lighting used in the video including black and white footage for the behind the scenes shots and normal colour for when the singers are on stage.

Homage-Tupac, Elton John 'Ghetto Gospel'

A homage music video is a music video that pays tribute to someone or something.
This is a music video which does not include the singers in the video. One of the singers, Tupac, was deceased when the song was released. The music video is about a young man who lives in one of the ghettos of America and tries to change his life around. However before he is able to do so, he is shot and killed. The video starts with the mans partner crying in the streets and then the next part of the song is played as a flashback until the funeral of the man. At the end of the video there is a quote from one of the singers mother saying "remember to keep yourself alive, there is nothing more important than that". This was a message to all the people around the world including people who live in ghettos. There are a lot of camera shots in the music video but the one that is used the most is the close up. This is used to show the emotions on the charcters faces. The video is generally gloomy as it is a sad video and also an inspirational video. The song in the video is of the hip hop genre. This music video pays homage to the rapper Tupac, who is the main rapper in this song. He died many years before and is known to be one of the best rappers to release a record.

Parody-Some study that I used to know

Parody music videos involve changing or copying existing lyrics from well known songs. Parody music videos are usually humorus and entertaining for the viewers.
The music video shown below is the song 'some study that i used to know'. This song was a parody of the well known song 'Somebody that i used to know' by Goyte. The music video and also the song is a parody of the music video by Goyte. The video makes fun of the fact that in the original video, the singers are nude. Also the lyrics are changed from a love song to a song about school. It is about how a student believes that the subjects he learnt in school did not help him. It also shows the teacher singing a verse on how the student did not listen to her. One of the main camera shots used in this song is a mid shot. This is used to show both the singers upper bodies. The camera also zooms out to show the students in the school walking past the place.

Influence-Kanye West 'Gold Digger'

An influence music video is a music video that affects the public in some kind of way. This could be in a positive manner or a negative manner. A lot of music videos are influential over people. The music video is performed by Kanye West who is a popular rapper and also by Jamie Fox. Jamie Fox is an Oscar winning actor who had just acted in the movie 'Ray' which is a film about the famous blues singer Ray Charles. It also features an interpolation of his song, 'I got a woman'. The song is about a woman who married a man for his money and had a child with him however after 18 years he finds out that the child ain't his. This song was very successful and received a Grammy nomination. The music video contains many different women who pose in front of a camera and also dance around the two main stars of the video. There are a variety of shots used in this video which includes medium shots, wide shots and close ups. These are used to show the women in the video as gold diggers and also to show emotions of the rappers. This video however includes the unusual position that the rapper Kanye West is in, which is facing away from the camera.

Pastiche music videos - Christina Aguliera 'Candyman'

A pastiche music video is a tounge in cheek imitation of anothers style. This is different to a parody as it is usually respectful to the original while a parody is not. An example of a music video which is of a pastiche genre is, 'candyman' by Christina Aguilera. The video is inspired by the 1940s and includes many soldiers who dance and sin alson with the song. This shows that the video is a pastiche as it is an imitation of the 1940s eventhough it was released recently. The song also includes three different versions of Christina Aguliera singing and dancing in the song. This is also a tounge in cheek reference to the three famous pin up girls: Judy Garland, Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth. The references however are not disrespectful. The video includes soldiers dancing and two dancers swing dancing in the middle. There are different camera shots and angles used in this video. One of these includes a tilt of the camera which shows the singer from head to toe to emphasise the attractiveness of her.

U2-Sweetest thing

Haaaa haa a, Oooh Ooh
My love she throws me like a rubber ball
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
She won't catch me or break my fall
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
Baby’s got blue skies up ahead
But in this I'm a rain cloud
You know she wants a dry kind of love
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
I'm losing you
I'm losing you
Ain't love the sweetest thing
I wanted to run but she made me crawl
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
Eternal fire, she turned me to straw
Oh oh, the sweetest thing
I know I got black eyes
But they burn so brightly for her
This is a blind kind of love
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
I'm losing you
Whoa haaa, I'm losing you
Ain't love the sweetest thing
Ain’t love the sweetest thing (background)
Ain’t love the sweetest thing (background)
Ain’t love the sweetest thing (Bono)
Ahhhh haaa haaaa
Ahhhh haaa haaaa
Blue-eyed boy meets a brown-eyed girl
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
You can sew it up but you still see the tear
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing
Baby's got blue skies up ahead
But in this I'm a rain cloud
Ours is a stormy kind of love
Oh oh oh, the sweetest thing

When I first looked at the lyrics for the song i thought that the song was about a man who has some trouble with his girlfriend. This was shown in the lyrics when the singer says 'my love she throws me like a rubber ball'. This shows that the man feels like his partner uses him and is not in control of the relationship. Also the words 'she won't catch me or break my fall' shows that he believes that he thinks that his partner only thinks about herself and not him. Also the words 'I'm in a rain cloud' suggests that he is not happy in this relationship with his partner and is miserable. These lyrics suggests that the song is a sad song and is about a man who is not happy in his relationship.

However the music video is different to the lyrics. The music video includes the lead singer on a carrige where he passes a lot of strange things which includes firemen, a marching band and a group of singers. They also pass many banners which say sorry or some form of it. This is because the song was written for the lead singers wife after he forgot an important celebration with her. This song is an example of a lyrics that do not match the music video.

[Chorus: Dido]My tea's gone cold I'm wondering why I..
got out of bed at all
The morning rain clouds up my window..
and I can't see at all
And even if I could it'll all be gray,
but your picture on my wall
It reminds me, that it's not so bad,
it's not so bad..

[1st Chorus: volume gradually grows over raindrop background]
[2nd Chorus: full volume with beat right after "thunder" noise]

[Eminem as 'Stan']
Dear Slim, I wrote but you still ain't callin
I left my cell, my pager, and my home phone at the bottom
I sent two letters back in autumn, you must not-a got 'em
There probably was a problem at the post office or somethin
Sometimes I scribble addresses too sloppy when I jot 'em
but anyways; fuck it, what's been up? Man how's your daughter?
My girlfriend's pregnant too, I'm bout to be a father
If I have a daughter, guess what I'ma call her?
I'ma name her Bonnie
I read about your Uncle Ronnie too I'm sorry
I had a friend kill himself over some bitch who didn't want him
I know you probably hear this everyday, but I'm your biggest fan
I even got the underground shit that you did with Skam
I got a room full of your posters and your pictures man
I like the shit you did with Rawkus too, that shit was fat
Anyways, I hope you get this man, hit me back,
just to chat, truly yours, your biggest fan
This is Stan

[Chorus: Dido]

[Eminem as 'Stan']
Dear Slim, you still ain't called or wrote, I hope you have a chance
I ain't mad - I just think it's FUCKED UP you don't answer fans
If you didn't wanna talk to me outside your concert
you didn't have to, but you coulda signed an autograph for Matthew
That's my little brother man, he's only six years old
We waited in the blistering cold for you,
four hours and you just said, "No."
That's pretty shitty man - you're like his fuckin idol
He wants to be just like you man, he likes you more than I do
I ain't that mad though, I just don't like bein lied to
Remember when we met in Denver - you said if I'd write you
you would write back - see I'm just like you in a way
I never knew my father neither;
he used to always cheat on my mom and beat her
I can relate to what you're saying in your songs
so when I have a shitty day, I drift away and put 'em on
cause I don't really got shit else so that shit helps when I'm depressed
I even got a tattoo of your name across the chest
Sometimes I even cut myself to see how much it bleeds
It's like adrenaline, the pain is such a sudden rush for me
See everything you say is real, and I respect you cause you tell it
My girlfriend's jealous cause I talk about you 24/7
But she don't know you like I know you Slim, no one does
She don't know what it was like for people like us growin up
You gotta call me man, I'll be the biggest fan you'll ever lose
Sincerely yours, Stan -- P.S.
We should be together too

[Chorus: Dido]

[Eminem as 'Stan']
Dear Mister-I'm-Too-Good-To-Call-Or-Write-My-Fans,
this'll be the last package I ever send your ass
It's been six months and still no word - I don't deserve it?
I know you got my last two letters;
I wrote the addresses on 'em perfect
So this is my cassette I'm sending you, I hope you hear it
I'm in the car right now, I'm doing 90 on the freeway
Hey Slim, I drank a fifth of vodka, you dare me to drive?
You know the song by Phil Collins, "In the Air of the Night"
about that guy who coulda saved that other guy from drowning
but didn't, then Phil saw it all, then at a a show he found him?
That's kinda how this is, you coulda rescued me from drowning
Now it's too late - I'm on a 1000 downers now, I'm drowsy
and all I wanted was a lousy letter or a call
I hope you know I ripped +ALL+ of your pictures off the wall
I love you Slim, we coulda been together, think about it
You ruined it now, I hope you can't sleep and you dream about it
And when you dream I hope you can't sleep and you SCREAM about it
I hope your conscience EATS AT YOU and you can't BREATHE without me
See Slim; [*screaming*] Shut up bitch! I'm tryin to talk!
Hey Slim, that's my girlfriend screamin in the trunk
but I didn't slit her throat, I just tied her up, see I ain't like you
cause if she suffocates she'll suffer more, and then she'll die too
Well, gotta go, I'm almost at the bridge now
Oh shit, I forgot, how'm I supposed to send this shit out?
[car tires squeal] [CRASH]
.. [brief silence] .. [LOUD splash]

[Chorus: Dido]

[Eminem]
Dear Stan, I meant to write you sooner but I just been busy
You said your girlfriend's pregnant now, how far along is she?
Look, I'm really flattered you would call your daughter that
and here's an autograph for your brother,
I wrote it on the Starter cap
I'm sorry I didn't see you at the show, I musta missed you
Don't think I did that shit intentionally just to diss you
But what's this shit you said about you like to cut your wrists too?
I say that shit just clownin dogg,
c'mon - how fucked up is you?
You got some issues Stan, I think you need some counseling
to help your ass from bouncing off the walls when you get down some
And what's this shit about us meant to be together?
That type of shit'll make me not want us to meet each other
I really think you and your girlfriend need each other
or maybe you just need to treat her better
I hope you get to read this letter, I just hope it reaches you in time
before you hurt yourself, I think that you'll be doin just fine
if you relax a little, I'm glad I inspire you but Stan
why are you so mad? Try to understand, that I do want you as a fan
I just don't want you to do some crazy shit
I seen this one shit on the news a couple weeks ago that made me sick
Some dude was drunk and drove his car over a bridge
and had his girlfriend in the trunk, and she was pregnant with his kid
and in the car they found a tape, but they didn't say who it was to
Come to think about, his name was.. it was you
Damn!

The lyrics of this song suggests that there is an obsessed fan who writes letters to his idol. This is shown by the words 'dear slim i wrote to you but you still ain't calling'. This shows that he has written to him and still is. The words 'i have a room full of your posters' shows that this fan is obsessed with the rapper. He also tries to relate his own life with the rappers as he says 'I'm sorry about your uncle...I had a friend who killed himself'. This shows that he tries to find the similarities of their lives to try and be more like him which shows that he is obssessed with his idol. The words 'I'm in the car right now, I'm doing 90 on the freeway' shows that he is angry and is probably become dangerous due to the fact that he is angry with the rapper as he has not recieved any letters or emails or pages from him.

The video suggest that the lyrics are similar to this. This is shown as he sings that he is writing a letter, the video also shows that he is writing a letter. Also the posters on the wall are shown in his room whic.

This video shows that the lyrics of the song and the music video are similar and a person who listens to the lyrics can get an idea of what the video looks like as the words tell what happens in the music videos.

This confirm that he is obsessed. The part where he says that he is on the freeway driving dangerously is also shown in the video as the man is driving drunk while recording a cassette for his former idol

Chroma key

Chroma key is a technique used in media which uses an image in front of a green or blue screen and changes the background of the image to what ever they want. This can be used in movies or television shows and also music videos.

Cutting to the beat

This is when the person editing the video makes the clips in synch with the beat of the song making the music video look better as there are a lot of different transitions.
Camera angles

High angle – Camera looks down on person making them look small
Low angle – Camera looks up on something making it look bigger
Eye level – Shows the object of the picture looking directly at the camera
Birds eye view– Shows the setting from a very high angle. Camera is usually on a crane.

Miming/Lip synching

This is when the person in the video mouths the words to the songs completely in synch with the song. This is a method which is mostly used in music videos as the recording for the song is done before the music video is made.

Understand the purpose of music videos

Unit 29 Music Video Production
Music videos are short films which accompany a song. They are now mostly used as a marketing device to boost sales for music artists. The first music videos were created in the 1920s but they came into prominence in the early 1980s mostly thanks to the works of the American television channel, MTV. Music videos are able to earn money for music artists as they entertain different kinds of audiences and these audiences pay to see the music videos.
One of the first examples of a music video was made by the blues singer, Bessie Smith. Her first video included images of Bessie Smith with her husband Clarence Williams. The song, 'Baby, won’t you please come home', included images of her husband coming home. The next music she recorded was her song, 'St Louis blues', which featured in the movie with the same title.

The first official music video was the song Subterranean Homesick Blues by  Bob Dylan. In this video there is a person holding a number of cards which have lyrics to the song. The person holding the cards drops it one by one after the singer, Bob Dylan, sings that part of the lyrics. The person dropping the cards is usually out of sync with the singer making the video unusual.

Another example of a famous music video is Queen ‘We will rock you’. This is one of the most well known songs around the world due to the fact that it is played across most sporting stadiums. The video includes a close up of all four members of the group queen. There are also instruments placed in the video but they are rarely used. This is maybe why the song is so successful in sporting cultures, as no instruments need to be played while singing the song. All four members of queen stomp their feet and clap their hands in synchronisation and then the lead singer, Freddie mercury, sings the song. The last 30 seconds of the song include the guitarist, Brian May, performing a guitar solo which is played until the end of the song. The video makes the audience feel as if the band are playing to them as there is no story to the music video and the members of the band mostly look towards the camera. The members of the band are wearing colourful looking clothes and they are also wearing a lot of layers of clothes. This is because it was snowing during the video which also shows the professionalism of the band as they carried on with the shoot.

The music video of, thriller by Micheal Jackson, was regarded as one of the best ever music videos. The music video is originally 14 minutes long however there have been many shortened versions made. The video starts with the singer, Micheal Jackson talking to his girlfriend until he becomes a werewolf type of creature. It is then shown that the first bit is a movie but when the real characters are walking home, the character of Micheal Jackson then becomes a zombie. This is part of the video where it becomes a song and the rest of the video consists of Micheal Jackson dancing along with singing while his girlfriend has ran off screaming. There are also back up dancers who dance in synchronisation with the singer and also are dressed as zombies. The main reason as to why this video is one of the most successful music videos ever is because of the singers very good dancing throughout the video. Also the lighting in the video is very good and since the video is supposed to be at night, there is shown to be fog around. There is also sounds from different animals throughout the video. The video won many awards and was hugely popular with the fans around the world. The video also included a voiceover from Vincent Price. The song was supposed to be a halloween song and was brilliantly narrated by Vincent Price who kept people entertained with his voice and evil laugh at the end of the song. The album thriller was the best selling album in the United States. This shows how an entertaining video which is popular with fans is able to earn money for music artists. This is an example of a pastiche music video as it mocks one of the news stories of around the time of the video was set in.

Narrative video
Another type of music video is narrative music videos. A narrative music video is one of the types of music video and it includes a story in the video. This means that the video has to have a beginning, middle and end. An example of this is a music video made by the singer Katy Perry. The video is called ‘the one that got away’. This song is about the singer and her relationship with an ex-boyfriend. The video is played along with the song and it shows the couple throughout different stages of the relationship including the part where it ends. The video starts with the singer at an old age and is having a flashback about the relationship and thinking about how she lost her boyfriend. The singer uses the music video to portray her feelings as it shows her happy and then sad. At the end of the video it shows her boyfriend dying after having a car accident and it shows the singer at an old age going to the scene where he died. The song is a sad song as it does not have a happy ending. When it shows the singer at an old age, the mood is dark and the colours shown are dull. This is done to show the mood of the character which is sad. Also when they are showing the flashback scenes they show a brighter mood as they are supposed to be happier times. There are many different camera angles used in the music video. These include extreme close ups, medium shots and wide shots. This is done to get a better understanding of the emotions the characters are feeling throughout the video.

A performance music video is where the artists perform the song in the video. There is no story in the video. They are sometimes performing the song to an audience like in a concert. This is sometimes good as it allows the people watching the music video the chance to feel as if they are in the concert and they are able to feel the atmosphere in the concert. An example of a performance based music video is the song by the Beatles called ‘help’. The music video includes all four members of the Beatles looking towards a camera. They are all sitting in a line and on stools. The leader of the group, John Lennon, is sitting in the front with an instrument which is a guitar and another member of the group, ringo star, is sitting in the back holding an umbrella. All members of the group are singing along with the song. Most of the members are holding guitars while singing along. the music video is in black and white as it is an old song.

Another type of music video is a concept based video. A concept based music video is where the music video has a message to the viewers. This can be a political message or a message from a company. An example of a concept music video is Micheal Jackson, black or white. This video was released by Micheal Jackson to send a message about the racism in the world to the public. The video includes a lot of different races and different cultures. This is shown in the video when the singer travels from an African culture to a Indian culture. The message of the video is that it does not matter if a person is black or white as everyone is equal. This is shown at the end of the video, when the camera shows a close up of different people who transform from white to black while singing the main words of the song. The mood of the song is generally happy as it is supposed to raise public awareness of a important issue. This shows how this video is a concept music video as it is portraying a message to the public.

MTV is an american music television channel. It was opened in 1981 and its original purpose was to play music videos on air. The first music video played on the channel was 'video killed the radio star'. This channel has made music videos famous. Other countries in the world have also shown MTV channels and the sister channel of MTV, VH1, was launched in 1985. The main purpose of this channel was to build on the popularity of MTV.
Top of the pops is a british television show that was shown on BBC. There was many host of the show and the most popular was Jimmy Saville who opened the very first show on new years day 1964. Due to the popularity of top of the pops, another show was opened called top of the pops 2. In this show, it featured artisits performing their songs live to an audience and video cameras.

David Fincher is an american music and movie director. He is well known for the movies, fight club and seven. He has also directed some famous artists in their music videos. He has directed Madonna, Aerosmith and the rolling stones. He earned back to back MTV awards for best direction. He also won a grammy for the rolling stones song, love is strong. One of the famous music videos directed by David Ficher was Freedom! '90 by George Michael. This video includes different models lip synching the song but also includes the singer in the video. The video is dark and there are instances of things on fire and things exploding in the video. This was done by the director to distance the singer from his previous performances as the things on fire included a jacket which he always wore while singing. The song was a bit of a success reaching number 28 in the UK and reaching number 8 in the US charts.

Another music director is Colin Tilley. Colin Tilley was born in 1988 and is an award winning music director who has written music and directed many famous stars including Chris Brown, Niki Minaj and Justin Timberlake. He is a frequent director of Chris Brown and has directed him in his most famous song, beautiful people. He won the 2011 BET award for Chris browns look at me. One of the most well known music videos directed by Colin Tilley is, Down on me by Jeremih and ft 50 cent. The video begins with a woman dancing in a club and then Jeremih is seen singing and then 50 cent also raps in a bar. The video ends with both artists looking at the camera until it fades away. The song peaked in the UK charts at number 30 and in the US at number 4.

Record labels

A record label makes and sells video and audio recordings. They can do it on various things such as CDs, LPs and cassettes. Some record labels spend a lot of time searching for an individual who has talent in music. Some of the best record labels have launched the careers of artists such as eminem, dr dre, jay z and rihanna.

One successful record label is the island def jam records. This was started by Rick Rubin and its first release was by the punk rock group called horse. The company has since focused on releasing hip hop, rap music. They signed some controversial rap artists in the late 1980s and have been successful ever since. Jay Z was once president of this record label and bought up stars such as rihanna, ne-yo and kanye west. This shows how this label launched the careers of these artists. One music video released by the island of def jam records was mama said knock you out by LL Cool J. This video had the artist inside a boxing ring singing a song into a microphone which was lowered into the ring. It also shows images of people getting knocked out when the chorus line is said.

Another sucessful record label is aftermath. This record label was founded by dr dre and current artists such as eminem, 50 cent and kendrick lamar are currently signed to the label. Former artists include busta rhymes, game and eve. It was founded in 1996 after dr dre left death row records after a dispute.
